Earthquake presents opportunity to serve Muslims
I’m on Skype right now w/Darcy Pierce, working with Food for the Hungry in Padang, Indonesia in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. The area is staunchly Muslim and was closed to Christian service organizations until now.
The initial work of search and rescue is completed and now attention turns to helping families tear down then rebuild their homes. Also, sanitation issues loom large.
Just one story: A couple was in the middle of their wedding ceremony when the earthquake hit and the building came crashing down. The bride was knocked unconscious and hospitalized for 9 days. These newlyweds are financially and emotionally devastated.
Food for the Hungry has made a 6 month commitment to help families and communities rebuild. They are considering a longer-term effort toward development in this Muslim community.
This earthquake was a dark tragedy but the one light in the midst of it is this: Christians now have an opportunity to demonstrate love to Muslim people. An opportunity that would have been absolutely impossible beforehand.
I have visited Food for the Hungry’s work in Mozambique and seen their dedication first-hand. i can vouch for the fact that your donations WILL be used for the intended purpose.
