Day 67: Make the Sabbath Special
Whether you honor the Sabbath on Saturday or Sunday, the important thing is to honor it. I’d love to hear how YOUR family makes the Sabbath special.
Hi Donna – we’re Seventh Day Adventist and we celebrate Sabbath from sunset Friday night to sunset Saturday night (per what the Bible says). It is my most favorite day of the week. I get all my housecleaning completed by Friday so the house is ready for Sabbath. God knew what he was doing when he blessed the 7th Day and gave us that day for rest. We do no work (no housework, no yard work, no work-work) on the Sabbath – it is our day of rest from activities we typically do during the week. We don’t watch TV, go shopping or watch movies – but rather spend time as a family. We enjoying eating with other Church families, going for walks to the park or zoo, reading stories about Jesus, ect. I try to make Friday night special by lighting two candles (one for each of my kids) for our Friday night worship and after worship they get to blow their candles out. We go to church and Sabbath School Saturday morning. All in all – it is by far the day I look forward to – time to spend with God and my family. A great book we have referenced is called “Making Sabbath Special” by Celeste perrino Walker. Maybe you and others can get some ideas too!
Thanks Jen. Very thoughtful and inspiring.
On a seperate topic, I think the Seventh Day Diet Cookbook is the BEST ever.
Blessings
Donna
Hey, I just came across this verse in the Bible and thought I would share with everyone. It’s found in Isaiah 58:13-14 and this is NIV “If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord’s holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, then you will find your joy in the Lord, and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.” My study Bible explains that “they ride on the heights of the land” as a figure of speech that describes how God lifts us, spiritually and emotionally, above our troubles and hardships.
Hey Donna – glad you like the cookbook…I’ll have to check it out, myself. I heard you mention it in your mp3 presentation on “Energize Your Life in Spirit, Soul & Body”. I know Adventist get a bad rap sometimes and was worried when I heard you start to mention us – but thanks for the sharing our health message with others!
