Why I’m NOT a Christ-Follower
I’ve noticed there’s a new term being used in the church in place of the word Christian. It’s Christ-follower. Have you heard that? Young people, especially, have adopted its useage. Rather than say, "I’m a Christian," they say, "I’m a Christ-follower."
I’ve actually formed an obsessive-compulsive thing about it. Because Christ-follower is true but it’s not the whole truth. It’s true but it’s not the most important truth. The scripture says
I Found the Proverbs 31 Woman
I’ve been following God and studying his Word for nearly thirty years, yet somehow I thought the Proverbs 31 woman was a mythological creature or worse—I thought she was a weapon spiritual leaders use to make all of us ordinary Christian women feel bad about ourselves.
But then I met her in person.
They say the wife of noble character is hard to find, and it’s true. But I finally found her,
The Christian Life: A Great Adventure
We were back on the bus, ready to move on to our next ministry assignment.
I was with a team of around 30 people, as part of a Brio Missions trip to Peru, and we had just enjoyed an amazing response to our evangelistic outreach on a random street corner in Lima. We stood amazed as the pandemonium of blaring horns, barking dogs, and jostling crowds suddenly faded into the
Maximize Your Prayer Life
One of the most spiritual places I’ve ever been was a centuries-old Spanish monastery in Lima, Peru. It was truly holy ground. God’s presence permeated the place, and whenever two or three people were gathered for prayer, God spoke clearly and unmistakably. I can’t wait to get to heaven so I can meet the monk who prayed the prayers and cried the tears to hallow that ground. It was absolutely
Make Sunday Special w/out Raining on Eve...
My favorite time of the week is fast approaching: it's our family communion celebration. It took me a long time to 'get the revelation' that it's possible to keep Sunday special--and sacred--without raining on everybody's parade with a bunch of rules and regulations.
Here's what the Bible says:
There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as
Facebook: It’s a Wonderful Life
Admit it. You've secretly thought how cool it would be to fake your death so you can attend your own funeral and see what everyone says about you.
What? I'm the only person that neurotic? Maybe. But I'm not the only one who watches It's a Wonderful Life every Christmas. If you are the only person left on the planet who hasn't seen the film starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed,
Your Life is a Report Card
A person who shall remain nameless (my brother, John) didn’t particularly care for school and his grades reflected it. Of course, he didn’t particularly care for the trouble he got in when his report card came home. So he came up with a brilliant idea: he took a pen and carefully turned all of his Fs into beautiful As. Problem solved.
Or so he thought!
You see, he may have changed the
A Life Recorded
A friend came over yesterday, sat down in my home office and noticed my current inventory of books in an open closet. "Is that all the books you've written," she asked. I pointed to the other side of the room at the wall-to-wall bookcases, "No, there all on the top shelf."
Even though I sit in here for hours almost every day, the reality never quite hit me until she said,
Website Madness & the Goodness of G...
My website had a nervous breakdown last night while I was sleeping. When I put my little head down on the pillow, all was well in my little corner of cyberspace. In fact, it was downright great. My website grade, according to Hubspot's fabulous website grader tool, was up to 73 (on a scale of 100). Then, by a cruel twist of fate (aka an upgrade from Yahoo Sitebuilder) all
Power of Intention
I attended a conference this morning with Brian Klemmer, author of The Compassionate Samurai. His basic premise concerned the Power of Intention. He said life follows a basic formula where:
Intention + Mechanism = Results
Then he erased the word Mechanism, concluding that the "how to" is irrelevant. Once you have EVERY intention of doing something, you will find a way to get the results you're after. Human beings don't do
